CHALLENGE
……………………………………………………………………
With 733 physical and virtual servers in data centres across 3 secured locations, this customer sought a cloud assessment and migration strategy. Analysis of both pre-existing and new data was required plus it was necessary to identify the operating systems running on the servers.
SOLUTION
……………………………………………………………………
SurPaas, from partner Corent Technology was used to conduct a cloud assessment on each location.
BENEFITS

> End-of-Life advisories.
> Flavor recommendations and customisations.
> Customer’s exsiting data analysed using built-in third-party tool.
> Indepth understanding of the infrastructure landscape.
Sol-Tec uses Corent SurPaas to Assess Microsoft Azure Migration Opportunities for a Police Service
The Project
A UK Police Service approached Sol-Tec to conduct a cloud assessment on both its physical and virtual server estate, with a view to migrating these 733 servers housed in data centres across 3 secured locations in the UK, to Microsoft Azure.
Sol-Tec used SurPaaS®, a Corent Technology partner product, to run a cloud assessment of the customer data centre. It analysed the data collected from scanning the servers alongside server data the customer already had available. Sol-Tec also compiled a cloud feasibility report to aid the customer in defining its cloud migration strategy for its data centres.
The Challenges
-
Servers running on customer’s data centre had End-of-Life Windows servers (2008, 2008 R2).
-
Data for some of the servers was already available from a third-party tool for analysis.
-
Customer did not have sufficient information about its servers e.g operating systems in use.
-
Wanted to select a cloud flavor for its servers that best met its business needs.
The Solution
-
For 2008/2008 R2 servers: Migration to Microsoft Azure with extended OS support was recommended.
-
SurPaaS®, with its capability to consume data from third-party tools, analysed and generated a cloud feasibility report for each separate location.
-
Using the network discovery option, SurPaaS® identified and displayed the servers running with IBM AIX, Linux, Solaris, Windows operating systems.
-
Along with suitable cloud flavor recommendations for each server, SurPaaS® allowed the customer to select a preferred cloud flavor for specific servers.
The Result
Migration strategy for the servers was defined using SurPaaS®, while adhering to the customer’s security standards and utilising the data already available from the customer.
